There are a lot of common household foods that your fur baby can’t have. This list explains several of these foods and why they should be kept away from canines at all cost.
Fruits
We know that dogs are omnivores, and can utilize the nutrients in some fruits. Many common dog food formulas include helpful fruit ingredients to balance your dog’s diet, and many people feed their dogs pieces of fruit as treats. However, the list below includes some examples of fruits that are NOT good for your dog.
Avocados
Avocados are a beloved health food to many humans, but it is best to keep that bowl of guacamole away from your dog. Avocados contain persin, which can cause vomiting and digestive issues in dogs.
Grapes and Raisin
Grapes and raisins are great breakfast food for you and your kids. However, dogs can have serious problems digesting grapes, raisins, and related products, to the point of causing kidney issues. Make sure to keep these foods in the fridge or in the high cabinet away from your furry friends, and be mindful of any cookies, fruitcakes, oatmeal, and other foods that may contain them.
Drinks and Treats
Keep a close eye to make sure your doggie doesn’t sip or chew on these human drinks and candy!
Chocolate + Coffee
Most dog owners know that chocolate is not good for your dog. But why? Both chocolate and coffee contain caffeine and theobromine, which are quite toxic to dogs. Be mindful that your pup doesn’t have access to any foods with these ingredients.
Milk and Creamer
Though many dogs can handle a tiny piece of cheese now and then, dogs do have a difficult time digesting lactose, and milk products can cause serious digestive issues.
Meats
Dogs eat a wide variety of meats from dog foods and cooked separately by their owners. Though dogs can eat most of these with no issues, there are some meat foods that can cause issues with digestion.
Ham and Bacon
These meats are very high in fat and when prepared by humans there is also a very high sodium content, both of which dogs have an issue processing. These can lead to digestive issues and longterm health issues like pancreatitis.
Bones from Meat
These bones can split, splinter and cause damage to your dog’s digestive tract or cause choking. They can also be a magnet for harmful bacteria. Chew toys are a much better option!
Other Common Ingredients
Onions and Garlic
Found in many savory dishes, sauces, and dips, these ingredients can cause dogs to become anemic.
Macadamia Nuts
These are found in desserts, baked goods, and trail mixes, and can cause vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia in canines.
Raw Bread Dough
Yeast in the dough can cause issues in the digestive tract. Make sure your pup doesn’t get a hold of raw dough when cooking!
This is not a definitive list by any means, but we hope that you can take special care to keep these common foods away from your dog whilst preparing meals, storing it, or having it out for company.
